493,036. Mine-roof supports ; section bars. RICHARDS, F. May 30, 1938, No. 16049. [Class 20 (ii)] Mine-roof supports comprise overlapping or mated section-bars of flanged channel-section wherein the thickness of metal in the webs of each section-bar is least at its neutral axis and the faces of the webs, as seen in section, are in the form of arcs of circles, the outer profile of the outer bar 7 and the inner profile 2 of the inner bar 1 being different from each other and from the similar nesting profiles 4 of the two bars. For a non-rigid joint, the flanges of the outer bar 7 are extended and perforated to receive the short legs of a U-shaped bolt 10 which embraces the inner bar, the pressure being adjusted by nuts 8. For a rigid joint, the flanges of the inner bar are similarly extended and perforated to receive securing bolts 13, as shown in dotted lines. Various forms of overlapping joints for mine arches are shown, and also joints of curved sections with straight extension bars, embodying the sectionbars formed as described.
