Abstract

492,787. Feeding sheets. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and RUSSELL, A. Sept. 1, 1937, No. 23896. [Class 100 (i)] Labels, blanks, or other sheets are removed from a pile by a peeling action, so as to facilitate separation. A suction or adhesive separator may be used and may act upon the bottom sheet of a horizontal or the top or bottom sheet of an inclined pile. As applied to a suction separator acting on the bottom of a pile a, the separator comprises a pair of rollers e, e<1> carried by a reciprocating carriage g<2> which is moved to the right from the position shown when the front edge of the bottom sheet has been drawn into contact with suction orifices e<2> in the rollers e, e<1>. As these are moved to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bottom sheet is stripped from the pile. The pile is normally supported by bands d attached to fixed clamps d<2> and to the rollers e, e<1>, and these bands are wound on the rollers during the stripping action due to rotation of the rollers by a pinion f<1> and a fixed rack< >f<2>. The pile is however supported during the separating action by fixed prongs i, Fig. 1, secured to the carriage g<2>, or by a belt m, Fig. 6, fixed at m<1> and supported by rollers l<1>, l<1> on the carriage. As the carriage moves to the right the belt m passes between the sheet being separated and the rest of the pile. Instead of rotating the rollers e<1>, e<1> by rack-and-pinion mechanism they may be actuated by a spring motor. Double feed is prevented by the action of an adjustable diamond shape stripper j made of razor-blade metal.
