Abstract

492,722. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent- Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen) March 24, 1937, No. 8731. [Class 98 (i)] An artificial luminescent material comprises a matrix of the halide of an alkaline or alkaline earth metal and an activator of copper, silver, cerium, thallium, tin or lead present in a molecular proportion of not less than 1 per cent. Manganese may also be present as a part activator. Numerous examples of the chlorides, bromides and iodides of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Sr, Ba and Mg, singles or in combination, and tables of the luminescent properties are included in the Specification. The materials are prepared by melting together the matrix and a salt of the actuating metal, preferably a halide. If the salt of the activator is volatile, e.g. lead or thallium, the matrix and the salt of the activator are dissolved in the same solvent. Examples of the preparation of magnesium bromide activated by tin, calcium iodide activated by lead, and calcium iodide activated by lead and manganese are given in the Specification. Specification 410,347, [Group III], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 350,732, [Group III], 391,100, 391,914 ; and 477,037, [Group III], (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts).
