Abstract
491,426. Screw - threaded nuts. UNITED-CARR FASTENER CORPORATION. Feb. 2, 1938, No. 3250. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1937. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a screw-threaded nut 1, Figs. 2 and 6, provided with projections 8 adapted to pass through an aperture 4 in a support 3 and to be bent over to engage one side of the support before the nut receives a bolt or the like, the projections are formed by shearing and forcing upwardly metal from that face 9 of the nut which engages the opposite side of the support. The nut may be of square or other polygonal cross-section and its face sheared through the corners to provide triangular-shaped projections the bottoms of which are integral with, or entirely separate from, each other. The sides of a nut 10, Figs. 7 and 14, are held in position by a die 12 slidably mounted in a die 13, and by a cover plate 17, whilst the opening 11 in the nut may be engaged by the reduced end 19 of a mandrel 18. That portion of the nut which extends above the top surface 24 of the die 13 is then subjected to the action of two pairs of laterally movable shearing tools 21, 22 having cutting edges 25 and open faces 26 inclined at an angle of substantially 45‹. The tools 21 move inwardly to form two projections 8 and are slightly withdrawn, to be followed by a similar operation of the tools 22. Four jaws 27 pivotally mounted above the shearing tools are then moved downwardly so that their cam surfaces 28 slide down the inclined faces 26 of the tools and their straightener surfaces 29 move the projections into a substantially upright position. During forward movement of the die slide 12 the nut 10 passes beneath a bridge 30 on the die 13, but during the return movement the projections 8 engage this bridge and the nut 10 is knocked over into a carry-off opening 31.
