Abstract

Anti-anaemic liver concentrate is obtained by extracting ground liver with hot water, concentrating the extract and extracting the concentrate with cold methyl alcohol. Ground hog or other liver is extracted at 70 to 80 DEG C. with water adjusted, by addition of hydrochloric or other acid, to a pH of about 4,5, the extract is filtered and concentrated under vacuum to a moisture content of about 25 per cent, and the paste so obtained is extracted with twice its weight of methyl alcohol at a temperature preferably of -5 to -10 DEG C. but in any case not exceeding 5 DEG C. The extract so obtained is filtered, concentrated to a paste in vacuo and dried, and is then dissolved in a solvent, such as alcohol, for oral administration, or is dissolved in alcohol, mixed with bone meal, again dried and put up in capsules or made into pills. A known process is referred to according to which a concentrated aqueous liver extract is treated with 70 to 80 per cent ethyl alcohol to precipitate ballast substances, the clear liquid concentrated and poured into ethyl alcohol, so as to give a final content of 95 to 98 per cent of alcohol, from which a precipitate of the active substance settles as a powder which is put in capsules or dissolved for use.
