Abstract

To remove fluorides from water the water is subjected to the action of materials which are capable of removing the fluorides from water and which, when they are exhausted can be regenerated for treatment of further water by successive treatments with dilute alkali and dilute acid. As examples of materials for treating the fluoride containing water dried granular metallic oxide gels are mentioned such as hydrated ferric oxide and hydrated alumina: chromium borate, mixed oxides of iron and manganese, bauxite, bog iron ore and activated carbon may also be used. Silica is generally removed with the fluorides. In operation the fluoride removing material is preferably employed in pervious beds and the water is passed therethrough till the beds are exhausted: the beds are then subjected to the double regenerating treatment, solutions of an alkali such as caustic soda, or ammonia, and then of an acid such as acetic, with or without sodium acetate, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or salts which hydrolyse to give acids such as aluminium sulphate, ferric chloride and ferric sulphate, being passed through them, the beds being washed between and after the treatments with raw water. Saline water containing fluorine compounds which has been treated with a hydrogen ion exchange substance and so rendered acidic may be subjected to the action of the material for removing fluorine compounds.
