Abstract

490,379. Distributers for sand &c. HOSKING, H. A., and HOBBS, J. E. Feb. 13, 1937, Nos. 4363 and 25323. [Class 6 (i)] [Also in Group X] Apparatus for distributing granular or pulverulent material on roads and ways comprises a wheeled vehicle having means for feeding the material to one or more rotary brushes which contact with the road surface and distribute the material transversely but not forwardly with respect to the direction of movement of the vehicle. According to one construction the distributing machine is constructed as a trailer and comprises a draw-bar 12 which is pivotally mounted on the axle 11 of the road wheels 10. The brush 23 is mounted on a shaft 22 which is carried by two arms 20, 21, extending from a sleeve 19. This sleeve is rotatably mounted on a tube 18 which is connected to brackets 16, 17 carried by the axle. The brush can be raised and lowered by a screw-and-nut device actuated by a hand-wheel 24, and is driven by a chain which passes round a chain-wheel 26 on a shaft 27 driven by one of the road wheels. Grit and like material is fed in front of the brush by an inclined shoot 35 which is supported on brackets 37 connected to the axle 11. The inclination of the shoot can be adjusted by means of a spring-pressed pin secured to the draw bar and adapted to engage with any one of a number of sockets formed in a bar pivoted to the underside of the shoot. In a modification, the brush shaft extends longitudinally of the machine and is fitted, at its front end, with a wheel which is frictionally driven by a disc fixed to one of the road wheels. The brush is carried by a wheel-supported frame having forwardly extending arms which are secured to the main axle. In a further modification, two brushes are mounted on frames which are pivotally mounted in an adjustable manner on a main frame. The main frame is supported by two front wheels and one rear wheel and is provided at its front end with an adjustable shoot. The brushes are adapted to traverse substantially the same path and are driven through chain and sprocket gearing by a shaft beared to one of the road wheels. The rotational axis of the forward brush lies longitudinally of the machine and that of the rear brush is inclined with respect to the direction of travel.
