Abstract

489,944. Casting-machines. POLAK, J. Feb. 3, 1937, No. 3153. [Class 83 (i)] Clamping moulds .- Pressure-casting apparatus comprises mould parts A, B, the lower part B being yieldingly mounted and containing a pressure chamber D closed at the bottom by a press plunger G, the longitudinal axis whereof is in the direction of movement of a driving member which moves down the upper part A to close the mould and then continues to move the closed mould downwards relativelv to the plunger G so as to force metal from the chamber D through gates E into mould cavities C. The lower mould part B may be carried by rams K and normally pressed against abutments L by liquid under pressure in cylinders H. The plunger may be fixed to a base-plate M or attached to a ram supported in a hydraulic pressure cylinder. The upper mould part A is attached to a movable platen O fixed to a ram operated by a hydraulic cylinder P on the crosshead Q. Where the plunger is supported hydraulically, the platen O may be crankoperated. In another form, Fig. 3, the mould part B is supported on a hollow ram K in a hydraulic cylinder H and the plunger G is fixed to a ram G<1> sliding within the ram K and normally held down by a spring G<11>. The cylinder H is connected through a non- return valve H<1> with a low-pressure vessel H<11> and through a non-return valve T with a highpressure vessel U which carries a discharge pipe V and a safety valve W. As the mould and ram K fall, pressure is transmitted through the liquid to cause the plunger G to rise against the spring G<11>, the maximum pressure on the plunger being limited by the pressure in the vessel U. Towards the end of the ram stroke, the vessel U may be cut off, so that the final pressure of the plunger G is not limited. After pressing, the ram K is raised by liquid supplied from the vessel H<11>. The vessels U, H<11> may be connected to the hydraulic cylinder of the press or they may be directly connected to form a closed circuit.
