Abstract

489,312. Cam and other shafts. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., BROCK, D. T., and TRAPP, G. J. Jan. 27, 1937, No. 2427. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] A supporting core 17, Fig. 2, 33, Fig. 4, of equal length to an outer tube 10 formed with cams 11, 12, &c., and which may be of light material is in driving connection with the tube by means of grooves in the latter engaging projections on the core. The core may be of solid square, triangular, or other non-fluted cross-section or a hollow triangle of sheet metal 17 welded at the corners which protrude to enter grooves 20. Alternatively it may be of integral star formation 33 in light metal such as aluminium or magnesium alloy. End portions 21 are formed with a flange 25 to fit in the tube and a triangular spigot 26 to which the core is welded at 27. In the case of the core shown in Fig. 4, inner ball races are shrunk on the end pieces 21, which are made of light metal. According to the Provisional Specification, shafts other than cam shafts may be similarly constructed.
