Abstract

489,310. Centrifugal separators. JEFFERIES, E. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1937, No. 2216. [Class 23] Liquids are freed from finely divided solids during their passage through a vertical cylindrical rotor 1 having conical external ends 5 resting in conical surfaces 6 having a slightly different angle from that of the ends 5. Compressed air or other gas is supplied through the connections 10 to the annular chambers 9 and it issues from the narrow passages 11 as jets which impinge upon the sides of grooves in the ends 5 and so cause the rotor 1 to rotate. The surfaces 6 are supported by flexible plates 12 and the lower surface is also supported by a plate 13. The liquid for treatment is fed from a pipe 14 to the inlet 4 and the annular passage 17 by which it is conducted to the periphery of the rotor chamber. The outlet 3 has a larger diameter than the inlet 4 of the feed device, and conducts the purified liquid to the chamber 18 with a discharge pipe 19. The rotor has two parts with a screw joint 20 and radial baffles 21 prevent the liquid from slipping.
