[Class 122 (iii)] A joint washer or gasket of the type having a hollow chamber loaded initially with a gas under super-atmospheric pressure is formed by two pieces of sheet material impermeable to gas held spaced apart by endless distance pieces which constitute peripheral walls of the chamber. A gasket, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a metal sheet 10, having ports 12, each surrounded by a channel having a deeper middle portion closed by an endless piece of sheet metal 28, secured fluid tight, preferably by welding. Before being put into use, the chamber thus formed is filled with gas, the walls 26, 30, bulging as shown in Fig. 3. The distance pieces 22 may be formed on the sheet 28 instead of on the sheet 10, or one may be formed on each sheet. In a modification a joint-washer comprises two endless members of T-section arranged concentrically with the downstrokes of the Tees forming lateral ribs facing each other, the inner member having an aperture forming the throughway of the washer, and two pieces of sheet metal secured to opposite sides of the ribs. This construction may be used for a gasket having a plurality of ports. The lateral ribs may be of dovetail section as in Fig. 7 and gaps 48 may be left to be filled with jointing material during the sealing operation. The T-shaped members may be formed by a stamping, rolling, spinning or machining operation. The periphery of the throughway may be concave. The distance pieces may limit the compression of the gas-filled chamber or they may be so weak as to be themselves compressed in use.
