489,030. Inductance and magnetic measurements. RADIATION, Ltd., YATES, H. J., and BENNETT, A. R. Dec. 1, 1937, No. 33043/36. [Class 37] Apparatus for measuring the thickness of enamel, paint and like coatings applied to iron bodies wherein the coating forms a gap in a magnetic circuit, and an indication of the amount of magnetic flux threading the said gap being a measure of the thickness of the coating, comprises similar electromagnets A, B in an inductance bridge with resistors m, galvanometer n and battery o. The poles of the electromagnets are formed at the open ends of an iron shell c and core b. The magnet A is placed on the coating and the armature d of magnet B is adjusted by a micrometer screw e until the inductance of the bridge arms is balanced, a disc scale f moving with the screw e and giving the described reading at a fixed pointer h.
