[Class 97 (i)] The film on a spool is surrounded by a removable light - protecting belt, the ends of which are yieldingly pressed towards each other to grip the end of the film ; means is provided for releasing the belt to permit the passage of the film, and such means may be operative in conjunction with a lighttight casing enclosing the spool &c. during the operation. The spool may comprise removable side plates provided with flanges 5 carrying spring - urged spigots 9 and entering grooves 6 in a hub 1. The side-plates may each consist of two plates 2, 2<1>, riveted together at their peripheries, and to an annulus 11 integral with the fiange 5. The removable belt may be a rubber strip 13, reinforced by a metal blade 14, and formed with grooves 15, and with annular channels 16 to increase flexibility. The ends of the strip 13 may have extensions 21, Fig. 4, along three edges which become crushed on to the film end. Buckle portions 17, 18, Figs. 5 and 6, may be provided on the belt ends comprising plates 21 22 and 23, 24 and carrying operating studs 25, 26, The portion 18 terminates in lugs 27 formed with catches 28 which are engaged by hooks 29 on levers 31. pivoted on the portion 17 and controlled by springs 32. The catches and hooks have curved surfaces permitting them to engage as the belt ends are brought together, and the engaging surfaces are sloped so that they will disengage when the belt ends are forced apart ; they may, however, be locked in engagement by a sliding T. shaped member 33 contacting with projections 34 on the levers 31 and movable by a stud 35. A plate 30 covers the levers 31 &c. and is provided with guides 30<1> facilitating the insertion of the lugs 27 into the portion 17. The light-tight casing within which the belt may be opened, Figs. 7 and 8, comprises chambers hinged together. A partition 36 carries a shaft 38 provided with a clutch member 41 which is engaged by a clutch member 42<1> when the casing is closed, and also carries a hub 39 to support the spool and belt. Levers 44, 45, pivoted at their lower ends, have their upper ends bent and slotted to engage the studs 25, 26, and the lever 44 also has a wedgeshaped part to separate the studs 25. 35. The levers are engaged by cam slots in a disc 43 on the shaft 38, and rotation of a handle 42, when the casing is closed, first locks the casing, and then, through the cam slots, turns the levers to separate the ends of the belt.
