Abstract

Textile materials are weighted by impregnating with a solution of a soluble weighting metal compound at 30 DEG C. or above, cooling in a cooler solution of the same compound, and then converting the soluble metal compound into an insoluble compound. The preferred solution is stannic chloride used first above 45 DEG C. and then at room temperature, the chloride being hydrolyzed or converted into phosphate and/or silicate. Hydrolysis is conveniently effected by flushing with hard water. The material may be treated alternately in the hot and cool baths, with or without intermediate conversion of the weighting compound into the insoluble form. Fibres or yarns may be treated by immersion, filaments, yarns, and fabrics may be treated in continuous lengths. In an example, a cellulose acetate fabric is treated for 1 min. in a stannic chloride bath at 45-55 DEG C., then for 1/3 min. in a similar bath at 10-20 DEG C., sprayed with hard water, washed, immersed in a bath of di-sodium phosphate for 20 mins., washed, and tenter-dried.
