Abstract
Lubricating oils containing a polar organic compound may be incorporated in a porous metal or alloy to produce a self lubricating bearing. Polar organic compounds referred to are halogenated hydrocarbons of the aliphatic aromatic and cycloparaffin series; halogenated alcohols; halogenated polyhydric alcohols, such as glycols and glycerols, and their derivatives; halogenated aliphatic, aromatic and cycloparaffinic acids and their derivatives such as esters, amides, salts, nitriles, acid-halides, anhydrides and the like; halogenated aromatic aldehydes and ketones and their derivatives; halogenated phenols and their derivatives such as ethers and esters; halogenated quinones and their oximes and oxime ethers; halogenated heterocyclic compounds such as pyrrols, pyridines, imidazoles, isoxazoles and their derivatives; halogenated condensation products of halogen compounds with non-halogen compounds and with other halogen compounds; halogenated animal and vegetable oils; halogenated petroleum derivatives; and mixtures thereof; and more specifically chlorinated diphenyl, chlorodiphenylene oxide, methyl and ethyl dichlorostearate, dichlorostearic acid, chloronaphthalene, chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated esters of oxidized wax, chlorinated lard oil, the condensation product of methyl dichlorostearate and diphenyl, and chloro-octadecanol. These halogen compounds are preferably used in conjunction with 5-50 per cent of a halogen free oxygen containing carbon compound of aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic nature, e.g. diphenylene oxide and diphenyl ether. An example refers to a mixture of 10 per cent methyl dichlorostearate and 90 per cent mineral oil.ALSO:A self-lubricating bearing material comprises a porous metal or alloy having adsorbed or absorbed into it a polar organic compound. Polar organic compounds referred to are halogenated hydrocarbons of the aliphatic, aromatic and cycloparaffin series; halogenated alcohols; halogenated polyhydric alcohols, such as glycols and glycerols, and their derivatives; halogenated aliphatic, aromatic and cycloparaffinic acids and their derivatives such as esters, amides, salts, nitriles, acid halides, anhydrides and the like; halogenated aromatic aldehydes and ketones and their derivatives; halogenated phenols and their derivatives such as ethers and esters; halogenated quinones and their oximes and oxime ethers; halogenated heterocyclic compounds such as pyrrols, pyridines, imidazole isoxazoles and their derivatives; halogenated condensation products of halogen compounds with non-halogen compounds and with other halogen compounds; halogenated animal and vegetable oils; halogenated petroleum derivatives; and mixtures thereof: and more specifically chlorinated diphenyl, chlorodiphenylene oxide, methyl and ethyl dichlorostearate, dichlorostearic acid, chloronaphthalene, chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated esters of oxidized wax, chlorinated lard oil, the condensation product of methyl dichlorostearate and diphenyl, and chloro-octadecanol. These halogen compounds are preferably used in conjunction with 5-50 per cent of a halogen free oxygen containing carbon compound of aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic nature, e.g. diphenylene oxide and diphenyl ether. The polar compounds may be incorporated in the bearing by soaking the bearing under pressure or in a vacuum in the polar compound or in a solution thereof in an organic solvent such as an alcohol, acetone, an ether, an ester, butane, petroleum ether, kerosene or lubricating oils, e.g. a mixture of 10 per cent methyl dichlorostearate and 90 per cent mineral oil. The bearing may be made of cast iron or copper, or of alloys containing (1) copper, tin, lead, phosphorus, zinc and sulphur, (2) copper, tin, lead and zinc, (3) copper, tin and lead with or without graphite, (4) copper, tin, lead and antimony with or without graphite, (5) copper, silver and cadmium, (6) copper, lead and nickel, (7) lead and barium, (8) copper and graphite, or (9) copper, tin and graphite. The bearings may be made by pressing the powdered components into the desired shape and then sintering. Bearings containing graphite may also be made by electrolytic co-deposition from a mixture of colloidal graphite in an aqueous solution of a metal salt, by electrolytically depositing copper on a layer of grains of graphite held in a mould, or by heating the oxides of the metals to be used with an excess of graphite in a reduction process and forming the resulting powder into the bearing under heat and pressure.ALSO:Alloys for the production of porous bearings may contain specified proportions of: (1) copper, tin, lead, phosphorus, zinc, and sulphur; (2) copper, tin, lead, and zinc; (3) copper, tin, and lead; (4) copper, tin, lead, and antimony; (5) copper, silver, and cadmium; (6) copper, lead, and nickel; (7) lead and barium; (8) copper and tin. The bearings may be made by pressing the powdered components into the desired shape and then sintering.
