Abstract

488,577. Power chisels. ALKIN, T. T. Jan. 11, 1937, No. 772. [Class 124] In a power chisel suitable for use by dentists, surgeons, sculptors, and engravers, a chisel 8 is attached to a holder 7 screwed on to the lower end of a reciprocable but non-rotatable plunger rod 3 which passes through a bush bearing 4 removably fixed to a tubular handle with a knurled grip portion 2. The rod 3 has a collar 5 to engage the head of the bearing 4, the holder 7 is slidable but not rotatable on the bearing 4 by means of a screw pin 9, and the lower end of the rod 3 is surrounded by a compressible coil spring 10. A tubular extension 11 forming a non-rotatable bearing for the upper portion of the rod 3 is removably secured to the handle 1 by a screw 6 and is surrounded by a sleeve 12 having a knurled head 13 and located between a shoulder 14 on the extension 11 and the upper end of the handle 1. A tubular extension 16 of a cylindrical casing 17 is adjustably but non-rotatably clamped on the sleeve 12 by a screw 18, the casing 17 containing a rotatable cam 19 or other means for indirectly actuating the rod 3. In the form shown, the spindle 20 of the cam 19 is connected by a clutch 22 to a suitable source of power. The spring 10 prevents the plunger being reciprocated except when the chisel 8 engages the work. The length of stroke of the plunger 3 and the blow of the chisel 8 is regulated by adjusting the tubular extension 16 in relation to the sleeve 12.
