[Class 37] [Also in Group XL] An attenuator for use in tests and measurements of phase-shift on high-frequency systems comprises two networks producing small but similar phase-shifts and one of the networks having negligible attenuation, means being provided for inserting either of the networks into the transmission line to prevent a change of phase when the other network is removed. Series branches of the attenuating network are inductive wire wound resistors, the shunt resistors being of carbon composition type and non-inductive but capacitative. Compensating networks with similar shunt and series characteristics are provided and these introduce a phase-shift equal to that introduced by the attenuating resistor network. The attenuator comprises resistors Z<1>, 2Z<2> mounted on insulators 2, 3 and provided with connecting strips 4, the compensator network consisting of conductor cable 6 with the inner conductor forming connecting strips 7, either network being inserted by switch C. The incoming and outgoing leads are constituted by cable conductors 8, and the common terminal of the shunt resistors 2Z<2> is connected to the outer conductor of network 6 at 12. The mounting frames 1 may be assembled in a common container provided with screening plates between the different networks.
