Abstract
<PICT:0488556/III/1> <PICT:0488556/III/2> In a process for the manufacture of margarine, industrial greases or other solid or semi-solid products from heated emulsions of oils or fats, in which the emulsion is atomized in a jet or jets into a cooling chamber containing a cooling gas and the solidified or partly solidified particles obtained are collected from the chamber for subsequent treatment, the cooling gas used is air which has been passed through a filter or other means to remove impurities and which has been wholly or substantially dehumidified, the air being supplied in a jet concentric with the jet of heated emulsion. Other gases, e.g. oxygen, hydrogen, carbonic acid gas or oxonized air may be supplied to the chamber, if desired with the jet of cooling air. The temperature of the cooling air may be thermostatically controlled. The jets may be of circular, cruciform, flattened or other shape. The jet of cooling air may surround or be within the jet of emulsion. In the example given, the materials pass from melting and mixing apparatus 3, 4 by pipes 5, 6 to an emulsifier 7 which, with a pump 9, is driven by an electric motor 8. The pump 9 supplies the emulsion through pipes 10, 22, 23 to the spray nozzles 24 in the cooling chamber 13. The pipes 5, 6, 10, the emulsifier 7 and the pump 9 are kept at the desired temperature by jackets supplied with steam or hot water from a boiler 11. The cooling chamber 13 is of square, rectangular, circular or other section and has its lower portion 14 formed as a hopper leading to an outlet 15 and the upper portion 16 connected through a conduit 17 to an air-conditioning plant 18, the treated air passing through a conduit 19 to a conduit 20 surrounding or partly surrounding the chamber 13 which supplies the nozzles 24. Each nozzle 24 is surrounded by a heating jacket 26, Fig. 2, having a concentric partition 27 giving a supply and return passage for the heating fluid, and a concentric passage 21 for the cooling air. The emulsion may be supplied to the cooling chamber at about 100 DEG F. and emerges at about 28 DEG F. The particles pass to a margarine blender or worker 28. The Provisional Specification describes the admission of the cooling air separately from the jets of emulsion, and refers to the treatment of soaps.
