Abstract

488,552. Making dies. GAY, G. E., and GAY, H., (trading as GAY BROS.), and TOURNIER, E. E. Dec. 8, 1936, No. 33713. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii), and 83 (iv)] A cutting die or punch is made of unhardened metal, which is cheap and satisfactory for making a reasonable number of metal stampings, the die 11 or punch being held in a bolster 15 cast around it, and then both may be planed flat together. The die or punch may be made of aluminium, bronze or phosphor bronze, which hardens in use, and the bolster may be of a lighter metal, e.g. aluminium or an alloy thereof. The bolster may be reinforced with harder metal bars or rods, e.g. steel wire. A recess 17 is left in the cast bolster to allow room for a tool to shape the rough interior edge of the die. The dies are mounted in a subpress with guide posts 23 slidable in steel bushes. An ejector plate 18 and a stripper plate 27 are provided. Rubber buffers 28 are provided for the stripper 27 and like buffers 19 for the ejector 18. Specifications 13337/94 and 16270/08, [both in Class 83], are referred to.
