Abstract

488,282. Worm gearing. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Gemmer Manufacturing Co.) Dec. 2, 1936, No. 33105. [Class 80 (i)] In a steering-gear comprising a housing A carrying a rock-shaft C on which is a worm gear E engaging a worm F mounted on the steering stem B, means are provided for adjusting the worm relatively to the worm gear. The worm has conical extensions F<1>, F<2> forming the inner races of roller bearings G, the outer races being formed by bevelled portions of the inner surfaces of sleeves H the inner surfaces being eccentric to the outer surfaces which are rotatable in bearings I, I<1> in the housing A. Each sleeve has, formed on a portion of its outer surface, gear segments, with which engage pinions J, J<1> on a shaft K rotatable through a polygonal head L and provided with a lock nut N. A cap P closes an opening through which the worm and roller bearings are inserted, and another cap is provided on the side for insertion of the rock-shaft and worm gear.
