Abstract

487,995. Controlling change speed gear on motor vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1937, No. 27536. Convention date, Jan. 28. [Classes 79 (iii), 79 (iv), and 79 (v)] In a motor vehicle in which the lower part of the gear shift lever above the gear-box is enclosed by a housing extending downwardly from the instrument board to the floor of the vehicle, the upper part of the lever passes freely through an aperture in a front or side wall of the housing so as to avoid transmission of vibrations thereto. As shown, a box-shaped housing 17 extends from the instrument board 11 down to the floor tunnel 13 which encloses the transmission and gear-box 14, the gear-box turret 15 and the lower part 18 of the gear lever being completely enclosed. The lever is cranked to avoid contact with the housing and passes freely through an aperture 19 in the front wall thereof, the handle portion 21 terminating approximately opposite the centre of the instrument board. A modification is described in which the gear lever extends straight up from the turret 15 and is bent transversely to pass through an aperture in a side wall of the housing, bringing the handle closer to the driver.
