Abstract

487,862. Cycle brakes. WEBB & CO., Ltd., H. C., and TAYLOR, F. W. Nov. 25, 1936, Nos. 32235/36 and 18155/37. [Class 136 (i)] A cycle &c. brake comprises pivotal levers carrying brake blocks for operating on opposite sides of the wheel, a floating compensating bar tc the centre of which a pull is applied by a cable &c. to apply the brake, rode arranged between the opposite ends of the compensating bar and offset arms on the levers, and means for adjusting the effective length of the rods. The outer casing 6 of a Bowden transmission is attached to a slotted bracket 2 secured to the cycle fork, and the inner wire 8 is attached to the centre of a hollow sheet-metal compensating bar or bridge 7, the upper edge of which is bent over and slotted to receive the wire nipple. The side edges of the bar 7 are curled over to cylindrical form for the passage of rods 11, the upper ends of which are threaded to. receive nuts 12 whereby they are adjustably secured to the bar 7, the nuts being prevented from slackening by interlocking notches and projections 13. The lower ends of the rods 11 have rounded heads 14 engaging apertured lugs 15 on pivoted levers 16 carrying the brake blocks 17. The levers 16 are of channel section, and the lugs 15 are formed by slitting part of the base of the channel and bending it outwards. The pivot end of each lever 16 is apertured to receive a sleeve surrounded by a coiled pull-off spring, one end arm of which bears in the base of the channel, while its other end arm is cranked to engage a hole in an arm 33, which is clamped to the end of the sleeve by a bolt 34 and nut 38, the angular position of the arm 33 thus being adjustable to vary the stress in the spring. The bolt 34 has a square head to engage a slotted and bent-up end of an attachment clip 37 secured to the fork. The Specification also describes a hand-lever for operating the brake and pivoted to a clip, which is attached to the handle-bar and is provided with a bracket formed with a hole and slot for receiving the end of the cable casing, the nipple of the cable itself entering a hole and slot in a. quadrant adjustably secured to the lever.
