[Class 83 (iii)] In a milling or like machine, which may be a plano-miller, the tool-spindle b is surrounded by a quill a provided with arcuate rack teeth c for imparting an axial feed, the rack forming part of a nut having its axis d external to the quill and parallel thereto so that it may be engaged by a worm e. The worm is rotatable on a fixed shaft j between thrust bearings k and is driven by an integral worm-wheel f engaging a worm g on a shaft h operated by a hand wheel i. The worm e holds the quill in its adjusted position and its mesh with the rack may be varied, to eliminate backlash, by shims m.
