[Class 74 (ii)] In full-fashioned hosiery, the heel portion is connected to the adjacent portions, both leg and sole, by its own thread, double loops being formed on the side edge. A leg I and foot 2 are knitted on a flat frame with separating courses 6, 7. The courses 10, 11 are transferred to a transfer bar, the courses 6, 7 are cut, and the foot is folded back along the leg, and the sole portions 3, 4 are folded over, so that the courses 12. 13 can be transferred adjacent to the courses 10, 11, respectively. Heel portions are now worked on courses 10, 11, the loops 12, 13 being progressively hung over towards the heel 14, Fig. 2, and connected thereto along the line 15, Fig. 3, which shows the heel 14 partially formed. Prior to or during the making of the heel, plain courses, preferably of a reinforced thread, may be worked over all or some of the loops 10, 12. The number of superposed loops for any course may be more than one, particularly in the heel angle, for example, the first operation may involve the transfer of five loops, the second four, and so on, resulting in a triangular piece in the angle in which all the loops are double. If desired, the heel may be worked on the sole portion 12, 13, and the loops 10, 11 transferred, making horizontal wales. In this case, the first courses may be of a different thread.
