Abstract
Colloidal dispersions of metals, particularly gold, silver and bismuth, are stabilized by the addition of a water-soluble oxy-alkyl cellulose or a derivative thereof and a water-soluble salt of lysalbinic acid or protalbinic acid or both. Suitable cellulose derivatives are hydroxy-methyl, hydroxy-ethyl or hydroxy-ethyl-methyl celluloses. According to an example, 2,75 c.c. of an aqueous solution of bismuth-ammonium citrate containing about 6 per cent of bismuth is stirred into a mixture of 25 c.c. of an aqueous solution of 0,1 per cent of sodium lysalbinate and 0,1 per cent of sodium protalbinate and 25 c.c. of an aqueous solution of hydroxy-ethyl-methyl-cellulose having a viscosity of 3. The solution is reduced at 50 DEG C., while bubbling nitrogen therethrough, by glucose, sodium hydrosulphite or formaldehyde. The dispersion is precipitated with alcohol and ether, and the precipitate dissolved in water. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of colloidal silver obtained by the reduction of silver nitrate with triethanolamine in aqueous solution in the presence of hydroxy-ethyl-methyl-cellulose and sodium lysalbinate and sodium protalbinate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the preparation of a dispersion of gold from gold chloride in a similar manner. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
