Abstract

Organic constituents are freed from their addition compounds with inorganic halides by adding a halide of Na, Zn, Al, Cu, Pb, Fe or Sn, or calcium oxide. The inorganic halide and added metal halide, which must be different, form an addition compound, and the freed organic constituent may be removed as by distillation, extraction, or absorption. Where the inorganic halide is volatile, e.g. a boron halide, calcium oxide or a non-volatile halide may be added, the addition compound formed being heated to recover the volatile halide. Addition compounds which may be treated include those of boron fluoride with acetic, propionic or other aliphatic acids or esters, dimethyl or diethyl ether, and methyl, propyl, butyl, isobutyl or higher alcohols. In addition to boron halides, inorganic halides specified are those of Al, Sn, Ti, Si and S. In examples, (CH3COOH)2.BF3 is heated to not more than 250 DEG C. with sodium fluoride or chloride, acetic acid distilling. Specification 486,669 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the use of alkaline earth halides as the added metal halides and includes a further example employing calcium fluoride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
