[Class 39 (i)] A multi-electrode discharge device has the electrodes mounted between insulating spacers one or both of which is or are embraced by metallic shields which form an enclosure around the ends of the grids for shielding the latter from the anode. In the form shown, the upper insulating spacer 15 carries resiliently supported hooks 18 for the double-M-shaped cathode 17, and pairs of wire supports 23, 25, 27 for grids 24, 26 and 28. It also carries supports 34 for the anode 32, the supports 34 having extensions 36 connected to a terminal at the top of the vessel. Slots 44, 45 are provided on the spacer 15 to receive extensions 42, 43 on the U-shaped shields 38, 39 disposed about the spacer and anchored to the rods 27, the shields having a width approximately equal to that of the outer grid. The shields have fins 50, 51 to protect the grids from the effect of the field adjacent the conductors 36 and the screening of the upper end may be completed by members 46. The spacer 16 is embraced by shields 52, 53 and shields 54, 55 are provided to protect the leading-in wires at the lower end.
