[Class 18] In a machine for forming into cartons blanks provided with locking elements e.g. tongues, of the type comprising (1) a series of forming blocks, (2) means for moving said blocks in succession past folding devices, (3) means for engaging a locking element on an end section of the blank with a co-operating locking element on another end section, and (4) means for removing the folded blanks from the forming blocks, (see Specification 10215/12, [Class 18]), the means (4) comprises a pair of gripping members which move in the same direction as, but faster than the forming blocks. As shown three pairs of grippers are provided, each comprising arms 148 of elbow levers pivoted at 154 on a support 156 attached to a sprocket chain 158 which runs faster than the chains 36, carrying the formers 46. The members 148 are momentarily spread at A by cams 170, then springs 168 cause them to grip the carton. Later, cams 172 again spread them and the cartons fall, open side uppermost, on to a travelling conveyer. The blank, Fig. 5, with or without a waxed paper liner, is forced through an aperture D by a former 46 into a U-shape (b is the bottom). Cam-actuated members 76, which initially serve to support the blank over the aperture, fold the flaps c<1> against the sides of the former, then stationary folders 94, 96 fold the flaps b<1> onto the flaps c<1>. During folding of the flaps b<1>, c<1>, the sections d<1> are held out of the way by stationary fingers 98. Two stationary folders 100 then fold the sections d<1> on to the flaps b<1>, two fingers 102 move to the right and push back the sections d<1> to the position shown, two cam-and-spring-actuated pressing fingers 104 press the tabs d<2> into the slots c<2>, this pressing being facilitated by the fact that the former is recessed at 106, and finally the tabs d<2> are pushed home by a plate 108. The fingers 104 and plate 108 move downwards with the former for a short distance. The plate 60 which forms one side of the aperture D may have side plates arranged to support the folded flaps c<1> while the tabs d<2> are pushed home by the plate 108.
