Abstract
486,212. Generating mechanical oscillations ; toothed gearing. STEINHAUS, L. Jan. 2, 1937, No. 141. Convention date, Jan. 2, 1936. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (iv)] Means for generating rapid mechanical oscillations comprises a number of unbalanced masses mounted on parallel shafts disposed around and fixed relatively to a common central shaft, wherein the shafts are rotated in the same sense and with the same velocity and the unbalanced masses are fixed on the shafts in the same relative positions so that the centrifugal forces due to the individual masses always act parallel to one another and in the same sense to produce a continuously uniform radial resultant force on the mass to be oscillated. A shaft a, Fig. 1, and unbalanced shafts bare journalled in end members c. Toothed wheels d, h at the front and rear ends of the shaft a drive wheels e, f, g, i, k, l on the shafts b. The gearing may be at one end only, in which case the sets of wheels must be displaced axially. The central shaft may also have an unbalanced mass and be connected to the other shafts by chain gearing so that all rotate in the same direction. A number of generator units may be connected end-to-end. The toothed-wheel drive may, as shown in Fig. 2, be separate from the energizing shafts. The unbalanced shafts may be arranged around the periphery of a mass p, the shafts being connected by elastic couplings o to the spindles of wheels m driven by an internally toothed wheel q. The wheels m are staggered to obtain a compact arrangement. Each unbalanced shaft may form the centre of a group of unbalanced shafts and a plurality of systems of unbalanced shafts may be arranged concentrically one inside another.
