Abstract

485,948. Dielectric guides for displacement waves. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 24, 1936, No. 35454. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1935. [Class 40 (v)] A transmission line for centimetre displacement waves consists of a metal tube containing air or gas, the ratio of the radius to the wavelength being of the order 0-6 to reduce attenuation to a minimum. An existing gas-supply pipe may be used, particularly if the inner surface is coated with a good conductor. The transmitter 10, Fig. 3, is connected across the outer wall of the tube 12 and a centre electrode 13, the receiver 11 being similarly connected at the far end. The transmission line may consist of an ordinary concentric feed-line, with the inner conductor replaced by a thread or strand of insulating material. As shown in Fig. 4, the inner insulator is a rigid corrugated band 20 of polystyrol surrounded by a stranded layer of copper bands 21. The latter are held in place by band-windings 22, 23 and a watertight cable-jacket 24. In Fig. 5, seven cords 30 are stranded together, each being separated from the others by an open helical winding 31 of string. Other suitable insulators are poly vinyls, ceramics, mica, quartz glass, and various magnesium silicates and glazes. Specification 485,996 is referred to.
