Abstract
479,841. Cables. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Aug. 6, 1936, No. 21725. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1935. [Class 36] An insulating spacer for the conductors of an air-space cable comprises a core 11 internally supporting a helical thread 12, Fig. 1, the core and thread being of polystyrol or other low loss homogeneous solid insulating material and the radial thickness of thread being greater than one-third of the mean internal diameter of the helix. The spacers are wound around the conductor 10 with a direction of lay opposite to that of the thread 12 on the core 11 and are surrounded by an insulating sheath 13. The insulated conductor thus formed, or a plurality thereof, is surrounded by a return conductor or screen 14 consisting of helically applied bands, over which is applied a covering 15 and a water-tight sheath 16. The covering 15 may be of insulating, conductive or magnetic material. The core 11, which may have a loose fit in the helical thread 12, may be solid or tubular, or may consist of a plurality of strands twisted together. Alternatively the core may be in the form of an axially twisted strip or an open helical string winding, the strip or string being twisted or wound in a direction opposite to that of the thread 12.
