[Class 17 (ii)] The stitches g which connect the upper c of a shoe and a leather outer sole a pass through the bevelled margin of a rubber midsole d which takes the place of bottom filling, the edge of the midsole being concealed from view by a correspondingly bevelled welt strip f which also is attached to the outer sole a through the rubber midsole by a separate seam h. The rubber layer d, which may extend over the whole shoe, or at intervals only, is vulcanized to the midsole and forms an elastic connection between the shoe upper c and outer sole a which protects the sewing thread against rubbing when the sole is flexed during walking.
