Abstract

485,405. Riveting. HEINKEL, E. Feb. 3, 1937, No. 3252. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1936. [Class 83 (iv)] Joints.-A method of making countersunk riveted joints consists in holding thin metal sheets to be united between a guide for a rivet punch and a support, the shape of which conforms to the countersinking, striking the rivet through the imperforate sheets by the punch whereby the sheets are caused to assume the shape of the countersinking by the countersunk head of the rivet, and forming the closure head on the rivet. Sheets a, b are clamped between a guide a for a rivet punch f, and a support d, and the rivet e is projected with great velocity through the sheets by the punch f whereby the sheets are pierced and caused to assume the countersunk form of the tool d, as in Fig. 2. The rivet is headed by a tool i, Fig. 3, while the plates are held between members g, h. The parts d, h are preferably made in one piece, the bores being arranged side by side, or a bush formed similarly to the bore in the member d may be received in the bore in the part h. The tools c, f may replace the holder-up g, in which case the tool f may be rigidly connected to the casing c and driving-in tool during riveting. The holder-up g may be of lead, wood, or rubber, or may comprise a bag of leather or other material filled with sand, metallic particles, or the like. The rivet may be closed by explosion riveting as described in Specifications 467,514 and 467,515, the striking stamp being continuously heated, for instance electrically, and allowed to rest on the rivet, after it has been driven through the sheets, until the charge explodes. A separate exploding tool may, alternatively, be employed. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the rivet may be headed by impact with a holder-up of lead when it is forced through the sheets to pierce them. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
