Abstract
485,341. Sweeping up submarine mines, seaweed, and the like. HARRISON, J. E. June 7, 1937, No. 15714. [Classes 9 (ii) and 68 (i)] [Also in Group I] Means for sweeping up submarine mines, seaweed and other underwater growths comprises two drag-lines 2, each of which is towed by one of a pair of sweeping vessels 1 and has a weight 3 and an otter 4 or iron-bound otter board 4a attached thereto for keeping the ends of the lines at the right depth and the correct distance apart, and one or more toothed cutters 5 towed between the two vessels by pairs of smooth sweep lines 6 extending between the drag-lines. The cutters are preferably constructed as described in Specification 474,579. The lines 6 may be passed around shackles 8 attached to eyelets 7 on the drag-lines and so back to the vessels 1. When used for cutting seaweed, a fishing net secured along one edge to the cutter and additionally or alternatively to the sweep lines and carrying cork floats along the other edges may be provided for sweeping up the seaweed. According to the Provisional Specification, smooth or serrated sweep lines may be towed between the draglines.
