Abstract

Manures.-New media for promoting the growth of plants comprise water soluble vitamins selected from the group of aneurin (vitamin B1), and lactoflavin (vitamin B2), their homologues and similarly constituted compounds admixed with or adsorbed on to inert solid or semi-solid inorganic or organic carriers, or admixed with other solid or semi-solid substances stimulating the growth of plants or important for their nutrition, or solid or semi-solid seed dressings. Examples of the vitamin B1 group are: N-(21-ethyl-41-amino-51 -methyl pyrimidyl) - 4 - methyl - 5 - hydroxyethylthiazolium chloride, N-(21-methyl-41 amino-51 - methyl - pyrimidyl) - 4 - ethyl - 5 - hydroxyethyl - thiazolium chloride, N - (21 - ethyl - 41-amino - 51 - methyl - pyrimidyl) - 4 - ethyl - 5-hydroxyethyl - thiazolium chloride and N-(21 - methyl - 41 - amino - 51 - methyl - pyrimidyl) - 4 - methyl - 5 - ethylbenzoate - thiazolium chloride. These may be prepared as described in Specification 471,416. Suitable compounds of the B2 group are isoalloxazines of the formula <FORM:0485079/I/1> in which A is an aromatic ring which may be substituted, e.g. by an alkyl residue, R is a substituent such as an alkyl hydroxyalkyl, polyhydroxy alkyl, cyclo alkyl or aryl group and R1 is hydrogen or alkyl. R is preferably a ribityl or arabityl residue. Examples of such compounds are d-arabo-flavine, 9-phenyl-isoalloxazine, 9-methyl-isoalloxazine, 6, 7-dimethyl-9-methyl-isoalloxazine and 3, 9-dimethylisoalloxazine. Suitable inert carriers are lime, peat, brown coal, chalk, sodium sulphate, or fatty carriers especially those capable of absorbing water such as wool fat or petroleum jelly. Examples of plant stimulants are quinaldine compounds, magnesium chloride or sulphate, manganese sulphate, potassium chloride, hyophysis and thyroid hormones, or b -indene acetic acid. Examples of plant nutrients are ammonium nitrate and sulphate, urea, urea phosphate, calcium cyanamide, carnallite, potassium nitrate, ammonium phosphate and superphosphate. Examples of seed dressings are alkyl-, alkoxyalkyl- or aryl-mercury salts, such as the acetates, nitrates, oxalates and silicates, mercury nitrogen compounds, methyl arsine oxide, quinones, quinhydrones or hydroxy-phenylhydrazines. Assisting the germination of seeds.-Seed grain is treated with vitamins selected from the group of aneurin (vitamin B1) and lactoflavin (vitamin B2), their homologues and similarly constituted compounds. The seed grain may be soaked with or caused to swell in solutions of these substances. Aqueous solutions with or without wetting agents or aqueous-alcoholic solutions, or solutions or suspensions in fatty carriers may be employed. The treatment may be carried out with the compounds and in the presence of the nutritive substances, seed dressings, fertilizers of growth stimulating substances, referred to above. Examples relate to the treatment of oat and wheat grain.
