Abstract

484,717. Machinery guards. GEMMELL, A., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 13, 1936, No. 31099. [Class 80 (iv)] Consists in a guard, for drills and other rotating parts, which covers apertures and projecting parts in the drill spindle &c. and, itself, presents a smooth exterior. A drill spindle 1 is shown carrying an adapter 4 to receive a chuck spindle 5, the end of the adapter projecting through an aperture 2. The guard device comprises two telescopic sleeves 7, 8. The sleeve 7 is fitted over the spindle 1 and retained thereon by a groove 3 in the spindle being engaged by spring-pressed balls 12 located in a flange 10 separating the thick lower part of the sleeve from the thinner upper part. A cap 13 covers the orifices 11 containing the balls. The sleeve 8 telescopes over the sleeve 7 and has a flange 9 and spring - pressed balls 15 adapted to engage a groove 16 in the sleeve 7. The aperture 2 is permanently covered, and access to the chuck may be obtained by raising the sleeve 8 which may be returned to its normal position (1) by a spring between the flanges 9, 10, (2) by the balls 15 engaging helical grooves on sleeve 7 or (3) by gravity.
