Abstract

In the manufacture of plaster of Paris bandages, gypsum in an unburned state is applied to a foundation sheet of fabric or similar material, and thereafter burned. The gypsum is applied as by means of an adhesives or as an aqueous paste to which adhesives such as gum arabic, starch, dextrin tragacanth, water-soluble cellulose ether or casein may have been added. Catalysts, for example common salt, to reduce the necessary burning temperature, plasticizers and fillers may be added. The burning temperature may be controlled to suit the desired hardness and a temperature of 116 DEG C. is referred to. The burning may be effected under reduced pressure. The foundation material may be treated against heat effects. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use, in the burning operation of a long tunnel oven having zones of different temperatures, the temperature at the entrance being low, so that drying occurs. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specification 2,009,597.
