Abstract
483,497. Reducing surface friction between a body and a fluid. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., LOBELLE, M. J. O., HOOPER, M. S., and MORREY, P. Oct. 22, 1936, Nos. 28751/36, 10918/37, and 10919/37. Drawings to Specification. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXI] Means for controlling drag on the surfaces of bodies, e.g. aircraft, propellers, torpedoes, or submarines, moving in fluids and formed with a plurality of apertures in the surface through which fluid is withdrawn comprise apertures arranged only over the trailing two-thirds of the top or corresponding surface of the body, and over the trailing four-fifths of the bottom or corresponding surface thereof. As shown the apertures are arranged in their most advantageous positions which are determined from a study of the airflow and may be connected individually or in groups with means for enabling a suction effect to be obtained at any predetermined apertures. The apertures may be formed as forwardly-opening louvres formed by slitting the skin and pressing it inwards in advance of the slit or by chamfered plates. The pitch of the slits may be determined from the formula l.q=60 to 80 where l is the pitch in feet in the direction of the airstream and q is the velocity of the airstream measured not closer than <1>/10 inch above the surface. The length of the slits may be from 0À025 inch and the depth of the openings from 0À01 inch to 0À04 inch. According to the first Provisional Specification the apertures may be holes of <1>/10 to 1/32 inch diameter and 1/10 to “ inch pitch.
