Abstract

483,476. Refrigerating; heattransfer systems. ELECTROLUX, Ltd. Oct. 16, 1936, No. 28192. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1935. [Classes 29 and 64 (ii)] Absorption refrigerating-apparatus is heated by an indirect heat transfer system containing liquid having its heat delivering member heating the boiler of the refrigerating-apparatus, in which the transfer system is arranged to be heated by two heat sources, one source comprising waste heat, such as the exhaust gases of an internal-combustion engine, and the other source operative. when the waste heat is not available. For example the boiler 10 of a refrigerating machine is heated by liquid circulating through a system including a coil 12 heated by the engine exhaust pipe 11 and a coil 14 heated by a burner. When the system becomes overheated the liquid expands and rises up an overflow pipe 33 to chamber 39 from which it returns to the system through a pipe with cooling fins 32. The apparatus may also comprise a transfer system in which liquid is evaporated and condensed. The heat source additional to the waste heat may be a heat accumulator. For example a continuous cycle refrigerating machine may be heated from the waste heat source and an intermittent refrigerating machine is arranged with its condenser in contact with the condenser of the continuous machine, its evaporator in the cooling chamber and its generator absorber heated by the waste heat source. The intermittent machine generates while the waste heat source is operative, but when this is cut off the machine commences to refrigerate and also supplies heat to the continuous machine to maintain it in operation.
