483,219. Sealing light shafts and like openings. GROOM, S. L. Oct. 21, 1936, No. 33566/37. Divided out of 476.310, [Group XXVIII]. [Class 107] Air inlets, light-shafts, and like openings are sealed in an emergency by means of a cover having a marginal portion which depends into a solidifiable sealingmaterial contained in a trough surrounding the opening, the trough having means for heating or cooling the material contained therein. Such means serve to hasten the hardening of the sealing material when the cover is fitted and to liquefy it when the cover is to be removed, and may consist of pipes to which hot or cold water can be supplied. Alternatively, the trough may be heated by an electrical heater. The sealing means may consist of substances such as pitch, asphalt, bitumen, wax or glue, which can be readily liquefied by heat. These substances may be used alone or may be used in conjunction with a sub-layer of oil or an aqueous solution such as glycerine. The cover may be tiltably mounted and may be fitted with mechanical means, provided with a remote control, for effecting its movements. Specification 476,310 is referred to.
