Abstract

482,616. Typewriters. GEIRNAERT, R. L. R R. Dec. 2, 1936, No. 33021. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1935. [Class 100 (iv)] Letter-spacing mechanism.-In differential-spacing mechanism comprising a fixed brake and a differentially movable brake co-operating alternately under control of the keys with a rail on the carriage, the means for engaging and disengaging the movable brake are separate from the means for imparting differential movements thereto. The mechanism is suitable for inclusion in a typewriter for typing lithographic transfers in greasy ink. In the mechanism shown in Fig. 1, a bar 66 on the paper-carriage co-operates with a pair' of normally-engaged grippers or brakes 60, 61 pivoted on the framework, and a normally-disengaged gripper or brake 34 pivoted on a laterally movable slide 32 which abuts on a stop 40. A wedge 33 engaging the gripper 34 is carried by a rod 30 which rests on a raised part 21 of a slide 20 mounted between guides 18, 19 on a laterally movable slide 14. The slide 20 has pins 22, 23 co-operating with stationary guides 24, 25 having projections 26, 27 at opposite ends. The slide 14 is provided with a, pin 17 engaging an inclined slot 13 in the head 12 of a rod 11 resting on the rear bar of a universal frame 1 of which the front bar is engaged by the key-levers 4, Fig. 8, in connection with type-levers 8. A wedge 59 engaging the grippers 60, 61 is carried by a rod 57 which rests on a raised part 44 of a slide 43 mounted between guides 41, 42 on a depending part of the slide 32. The slide 43 has pins 45, 46 engaging guides 47, 49 having projections 48, 50 at opposite ends, the guide 47 being stationary, and the guide 49 being movable longitudinally by means of an inclined slot in the head 55 of a rod 53 resting on the rear bar of the universal frame 1. The slide 32 is movable towards the right by means of an inclined slot in the head of a rod 38 which rests on the rear bar of a universal frame 2, the front bar thereof co-operating with lugs 3 or 3<1>, Fig. 8, on the key-levers 4. The lugs 3, 31 correspond in length to the size of the capital and small types on the type-levers, and means, described below, is provided for selecting the lugs 3 or 3<1> or other lugs when case-shift or fount-change is effected. On depression of any key-lever, (1) the slide 14 is moved towards the left, the rod 30 rides off the part 21 of the slide 20, and the gripper 34 is applied to the bar 66, (2) the pin 22 cooperates with the projection 26 to move rearwards the slide 20 and thereby permit the rod 30 to rest on a flat part of the slide, (3) the slide 32 is moved with the slide 43 differentially towards the right, the movement depending on the length of the projection 3 or 3<1> on the key-lever, and (4) the pin 46 and projection 50 co-operate ' to move forwards the slide 43, thereby permitting the rod 57 to ride off the part 44 of the slide and release the grippers 60, 61. The mechanism is so arranged that release of the grippers 60, 61 and engagement of the gripper 34 occur after the type-lever operated by the key-lever has effected compression. When the key-lever is released, (1) the carriage is propelled for letter-spacing until the slide 32 re-engages the stop 40, (2) the slide 14 is returned and the pin 23 cooperates with the projection 27 to move forwards the slide 20, the rod 30 being thereby raised to release the gripper 34, and (3) the pin 45 co-operates with the projection 48 to move rearwards the slide 43, the rod 57 being thereby raised to permit re-engagement of the grippers 60, 61. Carriage - releasing arrangements. - An eccentric arranged between the grippers 60, 61, Fig. 1, is rocked by means of a push-rod to separate the grippers and thereby release the carriage. Case-shift mechanism.-(1) To permit of fount-change, a slide 77, Fig. 8 is provided with three type-lever segments 80, 81, 82 which are movable forwards or rearwards in guides 89..92, and are provided with clamping- screws 93. The type-levers on the three segments have types of different founts. The slide is moved laterally until the selected segment is in the middle of the machine, and the segment is then moved rearwards to bring the type-levers thereon into engagement with the action-levers. (2) Each key-lever 4 is provided with a slide 108 carrying three pairs of lugs 3, 31 for operating the universal frame 2. The pair of lugs corresponding to the fount of types in use is automatically selected by means of a rod 101 which passes through slots in the slides 108 and is moved laterally by means of a rocking arm 99 provided with a roller 96 co-operating with surfaces 94, 94a, 95 on the slide 77. (3) For automatically causing the lugs 3 and 3<1> to co-operate with the universal frame 2 when capitals and smalls respectively are typed, the front bar of the universal frame is mounted on trunnions 245, Fig. 4, and is provided with a pinion 244 engaging a segment 242 in connection with a shift-key lever 236. Depression or release of the shift-key lever turns the front bar through a right-angle to bring an angle-bar 2<1> thereon into the path of the lugs 3<1> or 3.
