Abstract
Polyvinyl ketones are treated with alkaline agents to obtain products of increased viscosity but which are still soluble. Suitable ketones include polyvinylmethyl ketones, polyvinylethyl ketones or polyvinylpropyl ketones. Suitable alkalis include ammonia, amines, piperidine, pyridine, caustic soda, caustic potash, calcium hydroxide, barium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide and alkali carbonates. In an example vinylmethyl ketone is polymerized in the presence of acetaldehyde, diacetyl, and hydrogen peroxide and the product, dissolved in acetone, is treated with ammonia, the reaction being stopped by neutralization with hydrochloric acid at the desired degree of viscosity. The Provisional Specification also includes the subject-matter of Specification 482,507.
