Abstract
481,984. Floors; constructional metal work. HOPEWELL, R. Nov. 2, 1936, No. 29745. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] A floor comprises parallel joists 1 of I-crosssection, each of which has a ridge 4 formed or provided on each side of the upper face of the lower flange 2, and pre-cast filler blocks 5 which span the distance between the ridges of adjacent joists and are formed with stepped-back ends 6 adapted to lie adjacent the extremities of the lower flanges of the joists, one or each stepped portion 6 having a recess 7 to enable the block to be tilted for positioning it between the ridges 4. The block shown in Fig. 1 has a recess 7 at one end only, and the other end is provided with a tongue 8 which extends beneath the lower flange 2 of the adjacent joist so as to co-operate with the recessed portion 7 of the adjacent block. Plastic filling material 9 is provided in the joints on the underside of the floor, and the upper side of the floor is covered with a plastic layer 10 which is reinforced by network 12 having portions 13 which clip around the upper flanges of the joists. If desired, the network 12 may be provided with downturned limbs which engage between the end faces of the blocks and the webs of the joists and are adapted to form additional spacing means for the blocks as described in Specification 458,645. When the blocks are provided with the recessed portions at both ends, the spaces between adjacent blocks on the undersides of the joists are filled by fillets and filling material. Interlocking means 18, 19 may be formed on those edges of the blocks which lie at right-angles to the joists, as shown in Fig. 4, and metal channels , 20 are engaged in longitudinal recesses formed between adjacent blocks. To enable a joist 1 to be connected to a transverse supporting joist. 22, for example adjacent a staircase opening 21 as shown in Fig. 7, a U-shaped block 24, Figs. 9 and 10, is shaped so as to fit the upper flange 3 of the joist 1 and its legs 26 rest against the ridges 4 of the joist. Hooked clips 27 located on studs 28 on the legs 26 are accommodated in recessed portions 31 of the lower flange of the joist 1 with the hook portions 29 and pins 30 engaging'under the top flange of the joist 22. The block 24 is also formed at one side with a depending hook 24a which also engages under the top flange of the joist 22, but on the opposite side thereof to the hooks 29. The block 24 is provided with an upstanding screwed stud 32 for mounting a newel post. The joists 1 are held in spaced relation by rods 33 which screw on to lateral studs 34 on the blocks 24. The joists 22 are also spaced in the region of the staircase opening by a rod 35 which at one side is embedded in a wall 36 and is screwed at its ends in the joists 22 and in brackets 37 which support the end rods 33 ; at the other side of the opening the rod 35 is in several parts which hold, in spaced relation, blocks 38 for mounting hand-rail posts, such blocks 38, which are of angular shape so as to fit against the web and upper flange of a joist 1, as shown in Fig. 11, being secured by bolts 41 to clip plates 40 engaging the said upper flange. Screwed studs project from the blocks 38 for engaging the ends of the rods 35, and, in the case of the corner blocks, the rods 33.
