Abstract

Scrap cellulose organic ester material is rendered suitable for use in moulding compositions by dissolving the ester in glacial acetic acid, adding a small amount of sulphuric acid, heating to 90-150 DEG F. until the viscosity has fallen to a desired value, adding aqueous acetic acid, maintaining the heating until the precipitation value has fallen below 70 per cent, and precipitating with water. The precipitation value is determined by dissolving the ester in a specified amount of acetone and adding aqueous acetone until a mixture is obtained containing 40 per cent of water. The amount of dissolved ester in the clear supernatant liquid is determined and from this is calculated the precipitation value. Particulars are also given of methods for determining viscosity, and for heat, colour and haze tests. Specification 408,952 is referred to.
