Abstract

480,586. Magnetic separators. FRANTZ, S. G. May 20, 1936, No. 14276. Convention date, May 20, 1935. [Class 72] In magnetic separators of the kind in which a plurality of elongated magnetizable members are arranged in a passage extending through a gap in a magnetic circuit. the to be treated flowing through said passage and being confined by the gap so that a cross-section through said passage in the general direction of the flux will present a multiplicity of discrete crosssections distributed and closely spaced in two dimensions throughout the passage, the elongated members are stationary within the gap, the flux is generated by coils surrounding the gap, and the direction of flow of the materials is in the same direction as that of the flux. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the magnetizable members are in the form of screens 6, Fig. 2, made up of two strips of magnetic material wound in pancake form, each strip having one edge in the top plane and the other edge in the bottom plane of the pancake. The screens are mounted in the passage 14 formed in a shell member 5 provided internally with windings 1 and having end members 3, 4, the member 3 having an opening in which is fitted a hopper 12, the parts 3, 4, 5 being made of magnetic material. When dealing with pottery slip &c., a pipe'7 is fitted in a casing 9 formed within the screen 6 and closed by a cap 11, and is seated in an extension 13 fitting an aperture in the end 4. Apertures 8 are provided in the pipe 7 just below the cap 11, and when the slip &c. is fed in through the hopper 12, it passes down through the screens 6, the purified slip &c. passing into the passage 10 in the casing 9 and through the holes 8 into the pipe 7 and so is discharged. In another form, the pipe 7 is secured to a float provided in the hopper so that it is lifted off its seat in the opening in the end 4. For treating dry materials, the pipe 7 and extension 13 are omitted and the casing 9 is agitated by an eccentric weight mounted on a shaft which passes through the passage 10 for the casing 9 and is rotated. In a further form, Fig. 5, the screens 6 are mounted in all or part of the space between a cone or double-cone member 30, the faces of which and the members 3b, 4b may be corrugated or serrated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also contains the subject-matter of Specification 480,669, and describes a form in which the attractors are straight flat strips placed horizontally across the passage and inclined forward to provide'a number of cascade systems. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
