Abstract

An absorbent mass chiefly consisting of silica is obtained by decomposing siliceous raw materials by fusion with such an excess of alkali that the product will disintegrate on treatment with water with the deposition of the water-insoluble constituents as a finely divided precipitate, treating the product with water to cause such disintegration thereof, separating the finely divided precipitate from the solution and decomposing the precipitate with acids or acid salts to produce a pulverulent silicic acid. The acid decomposition may be effected in the presence of electrolytes, e.g. soluble silicates, or non-electrolytes, e.g. organic substances. The product may be wholly or partially washed and/or freed from water. Finally it may be calcined. According to an example, water-washed insoluble residues from waterglass filtration are boiled with dilute hydrochloric acid, one or several times with intervening decantation or filtration. The product is washed, dried and calcined. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the preparation of melts in such a manner that in the subsequent preparation therefrom of waterglass, a large amount of water-insoluble silicates are obtained for submission to the subsequent acid treatment. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
