Abstract

A stable film-like coating, e.g. of a cellulose ester or ether or a resinous polymerization product, is applied locally or over the whole surface of a fabric prior to the usual finishing, e.g. bleaching, dyeing and dressing, operations. Dyestuffs or pigments may be incorporated in the coating material or such material may be dyed subsequent to its application to the fabric. Alternatively, the coating material may be used to cause two layers of fabric to adhere, special effects being obtainable by the use of fabrics shrinking to different degrees during the finishing operations. In examples: (1) a solution of acetylcellulose in acetone is applied to one side of a fabric having viscose artificial silk in the warp and "Vistra" (Registered Trade Mark) cr<\>zepe in the weft and, after being dried, the fabric is subjected to the usual treatment with soda lye, desized in a bath containing Marseilles soap and soda, dyed with Chicago blue, stretched and, if desired, calendered and steamed; (2) a mixed fabric of acetate artificial silk and "Vistra" cr<\>zepe is printed in stripes with a solution of nitrocellulose and tricresyl phosphate in acetone, dried, cr<\>zeped, desized and bleached; (3) a fabric having viscose artificial silk in the warp and viscose cr<\>zepe in the weft is printed in spots with the solution used in (1) dried, desized and dyed with a substantive dye; the printed portions remain white; (4) a viscose georgette fabric is covered with an adhesive film coating and a viscose dull cr<\>zepe fabric pressed upon the coating by a cylinder with a raised pattern.
