Abstract
<PICT:0479787/IV/1> <PICT:0479787/IV/2> Freshly spun and cut staple fibre is formed into a web-like band adapted to facilitate the necessary after-treatments such as washing, by delivery to an inclined shoot 2 in which it is beaten up by water jets 23, 24 positioned on its wide sides. The shoot narrows towards its mouth as shown, and its lateral width may be varied by adjusting the position of the narrow sides. The web formed is delivered on to a sieve band 5 above which are spray pipes 6 for the treatment liquid and below which similar upwardly-directed sprays may be provided. For a subsequent treatment, the web may be re-formed and then re-treated; or it may be carried by a number of sieve bands 5, 11, 17, and after each treatment, liquid is removed by squeezing rollers arranged as at 8, 9 with a collector 10 to receive the liquid, or as at 13, 14, the lower roller 14 carrying a band 15 to conduct the expressed liquid to its collector 16. Liquid is generally collected in troughs 18 arranged below the bands, and these troughs may be divided corresponding to the sprays 6. To prevent spreading of the web, fixed ledges may be placed at the edges of the bands, such ledges being parallel or preferably converging in the direction of travel of the web. Specification 450,216 is referred to.
