Abstract

478,868. Motor vehicles ; springs and vibration-dampers. AUBAREDE, P. C. A. M. D'. March 24, 1937, No. 8672. Addition to 456,454. [Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A radial-cylinder engine or machine having lateral shafts is mounted so as to be able to oscillate conically by means of springs 6 to counteract torque, and yielding means 5 supporting the weight of the machine and connected to the support 4 on the line X-X, of the resultant of the internal torques and the action of the springs at a place between the C.G. and the centre C of the conical oscillations which result from the internal forces and the action of the springs. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to an engine having a vertical crank-shaft and lateral shafts 3 which may be coupled to the driving wheels of a vehicle. A limiting abutment is fitted at the top of the engine and comprises a rubber cup 10 housed with play in a casing 11. In place of the springs 6 a single spiral spring 13, Fig. 3, could be used in conjunction with reaction plates 16 ; in a modified form of this device the plates are secured to a ring encircling the spring. The block 5 may be replaced by a ring housed between flanges secured to the gear box 2 and the frame 4 : such flanges may be inclined as shown in Fig. 6, in which case the ring may be in sections. Slightly modified forms of the abutment are described which act also as springs for small displacements of the engine. In the abutment shown in Fig. 12, a nose 20 carried by leaf springs 21 is covered with rubber and enclosed by a box 27. One end of the springs slides in a slit 22a in the frame and the other is looped over a rubbercovered pin 25 on the frame. Modifications of this device, two of which are used without the springs, are described the whole of the space between the nose and the box being occupied by block rubber, i.e. no free play being allowed. An alternative device to the block 5 comprises a bar fixed to the box 2 and passing along the centre of a block of rubber having circular ends and flat sides and fitted in a ring secured to the frame 4. With this device an abutment of the construction shown in Fig. 18 is preferably used. Here the nose is pressed by adjustable springs 39 and an internal block 41 is secured by a bolt 42 and a nut 43. The springs 6 may also be replaced by a number of rubber blocks arranged circumferentially between brackets on the engine casing and a ring on the frame. The invention is applicable also to radial engines placed horizontally ; in this case the connection at 5 may take the form of a hollow rod projecting from the engine and passing along the centre of a rubber block contained in a circular sleeve secured to the frame. Specifications 413,092 and 439,667 are referred to.
