[Class 130] [Also in Group XXX] In a tobacco-feeding mechanism for continuous-rod cigarette-making machines, in which tobacco is showered from a feed drum 12 by a picker roll 14 upon a wide flat conveying member 15 to form a sheet or layer and conveyed thereby in a direction transverse to the cigarette rod, a vibrating device is provided for imparting upward and downward vibratory movements to the member 15 at a frequency such as to render uniform the layer of tobacco conveyed thereby. As shown, the member 15 is supported by a bracket 16 connected to a vibrating device of the kind comprising a centre clamp 17, Fig. 2, secured to the middle of a group of vibrator bars 21 clamped at their ends in a fixed frame 22. An armature 20 carried by the clamp 17 is vibrated by an electromagnet 18 supported by the frame 22 and supplied with an alternating current or with a direct current superposed on an alternating current. The vibrations are imparted at an angle to the member 15, so that the tobacco travels upwards to the delivery end, at which it is showered into the shoot 27 on to a cigarette-paper web P. In modifications, the upper run of a conveyer belt travels over the member 15, which may engage the belt directly or by means of crossbars. In a further form, the upper rim of a conveyer belt is vibrated by mechanical means consisting of one or more polygonal cross-bars engaging the underside of the belt and rotated by sprocket gearing. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 mentions the application of the invention to conveyers for scrap tobacco in cigar-making machines, and conveyers for other disintegrated material. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
